Magic Carpet Dream
I suddenly feel the desire to celebrate treasured memories, the
magic moments of childhood that made my life worth living. I loved
being in trees, viewing the world from high above. Trees were not
only a place to hide; they were a place to dream.
The way we both asked at once about the book made me think that
there must be such a book and that I should read it. After a search,
I found it. First published in 1884, Flatlands is a narrative of
a two dimensional world, a presentation of geometrical concepts
and a barbed satire of the hierarchical world of the Victorians.
It gave me a renewed sense of the value of challenging a given perspective
of the world. I have focused on the deep pain of my past and have
found that pain is the heart of the pearl. My life history hasn't
changed, the pain is still there but my perspective has changed.
I have discovered that, indeed, the worst in me is the best in me.
Dream:
Dick and I were in the car going through a flood. We had to pull
off the road several times for emergency vehicles. The last time
I saw rescuers who had just brought in a rock climber. He had gone
up beyond his ability to return. He came to talk to me. I said I
could imagine myself in that same position. But, I said I thought
it was better to have gone too high than to never have left the
flatlands. Then we both said at once, "Have you read Flatlands?"
